Steel castings process: Types of steel & its uses

Steel is an alloy that is extensively used in our day to day life. From utensils in the kitchen, appliances and is used for making components of automobile industry etc. If you are searching for steel casting procedures and want to know few things in mind while performing steel castings in industry then you are in prefect place right now.

Without wasting any time let us discuss what is steel castings?. Steel casting is a manufacturing process where the molten steel is poured into mould cavity. When it involves wax mould then it is called lost wax steel castings.

Working of steel casting process

The molten steel is kept in lodle and is poured into tundish. The tundish has submerged entry nozzle and meniscus which keeps the molten liquid in flow. It passes through strand, support roll and solidifying roll where it is casted into metallurgical desired length. The required length is measured and cast is made to get the finished product solid steel slab.

Steel casting types

There are 5 types of steel castings. They are as follows:-

  • Sand castings
  • Plaster mould casting
  • Investment casting
  • Shell molding
  • Die castings

Types of steel

There are basically 4 types of industrial steel. They are as follows:-

  • High carbon steel
  • Mild steel
  • Medium carbon steel
  • Stainless steel.

Uses of Steel

  • Construction industry
  • Automobile industry
